Family Counseling Center
Family Healing Process
Family Assessment – Corner Canyon believes that families are an integral part of a client’s process and progress. Appropriate family members, generally the family of origin and/or current loved ones, will be contacted by the client’s therapist within the first 3-4 days of a client admitting into Corner Canyon. Our family counseling center will then assess the family dynamics and obtain information that the family has to offer. Due to federal regulations and the right to confidentiality, Corner Canyon is only able to contact family members that the client permits us to contact. Our goal is to aid the client and family in creating a blueprint for improved relationships and assistance with recovery for all members.
Family Therapy – Family Therapy sessions occur during family weekends, and there are family therapy calls with the therapist that take place in between family weekends. Both family sessions and family calls can be arranged outside of family weekends through the client’s primary therapist. These sessions and calls must also be authorized by the client through a signed release of information. Family sessions and family calls are designed to facilitate resolution of past issues, look at family systems and problems, and establish new healthy interaction patterns in order to support the client in recovery and relapse prevention.
Family Group via Go-To-Meeting one night a week to provide support and education for loved ones.
Communication – Phone passes are given after clients have settled in, generally one week after admission, but this may vary from client to client. These passes can be used to call family and other appropriate contacts. Phone passes are contingent upon each client’s personal work, which is reflective of their own internal motivation and desire to change. Families are taught Assertive Communication skills, which they practice while at Corner Canyon, this helps them to listen to each other, express their needs assertively, and improve their relationships.
Corner Canyon Therapists are trained and experienced in Family Systems Theory and Therapy, and in Gottman Method Couples Therapy, and have a strong focus on both aiding the family in healing and in preparing the family system to support the positive changes the client makes while in treatment. The “puzzle piece” the client represents changes shape while in treatment, and the family needs to adapt in order for the whole puzzle to work in a healthier and happier way upon reunification.
Family weekends occur every three weeks, or as needed, at Corner Canyon’s family counseling center and are designed to facilitate psychoeducation, family therapy, and reconnection with family members. Topics may include but are not limited to, neurochemistry to understand the effects of drugs and alcohol on the brain and the process of addiction, family systems work, art therapy, psychodrama, communication skills, and other psychoeducational topics.
The schedule is 9-5 Friday, with Saturday passes for family visits available. Passes for family visits are dependent on what phase the client has achieved and their personal accomplishments of treatment assignments in addition to clinical recommendations. We encourage family visits and family therapy, we believe that improvement in relationships aids in the recovery process and establishes a good foundation for the client’s return to the family system

Corner Canyon Recovery recommends that in addition to our family counseling center, loved ones attend Al-anon to gain an understanding of how to interact most appropriately with their loved one and how to take care of themselves while in a relationship with a person who struggles with addiction. There are Al-anon meetings in every city and most towns and they can be an invaluable source of support.
