It is commonly believed that vaping is a safer way to smoke a cigarette compared to when it is rolled up in its natural form. The problem is that with this belief spreading, more young adults are continuing to vape, arguing that it is safe. A new study by the University of Kansas School of Medicine shows that vaping can lead to developing heart issues as well as depression.
What Vaping Is
Vaping is using e-cigarettes that are battery-powered and handheld that mimic the experience of smoking a cigarette. You heat the e-liquid that is made of nicotine, solvent carriers, and other flavors or chemicals. Heating these chemicals in a high temperature turns into aerosol or vapor that is inhaled or exhaled. The study’s lead author, Mohinder Vindhyal, MD, there are more than 460 brands of e-cigarettes and 7,700 flavors. Ever since being introduced in 2007, e-cigarettes have become very popular as well as the ongoing debates about the safety of them.
University of Kansas Study Effects
In The University of Kansas’s study, researchers looked at the rates of 96,467 people’s high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, coronary heart disease, diabetes, and depression/anxiety to those who use e-cigarettes and those who do not. This study proved that 56% of e-cigarette users are more likely to have a heart attack and 30% more likely to have a stroke. Coronary artery disease and circulatory problems like blood clots were seen more higher than those who vape. The group was also twice as likely to develop depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses.
Those who use e-cigarettes on a daily basis had the higher odds of developing heart attacks, coronary heart disease, and depression/anxiety whereas those who only smoke occasionally would be more likely to have a heart attack or mental illnesses. This could be because of the decreased toxic effects of e-cigarette usage, early waste of the toxic effects, or not studied long enough to show permanent damage.
University of Kansas Study Limitations
This study does not let researchers determine the cause of the health effects, but a clear association of smoking and its negative consequences. Researchers also do not know if these results occurred before using e-cigarettes. With more studies done such as this one, people will know the truth about the toxicity of e-cigarettes and that they are not worth dealing with the negative health consequences that you can be experiencing.
