How Addiction Affects the Human Body

Addiction is a complex disease that changes the way the brain works. The brain controls the way a person thinks, feels, talks, moves, and the function of all organs in the body. These organs need to stay healthy in order to operate on a daily basis and are essential to survival. Addiction causes organ failure, overdose, and can lead to early death.

The brain helps us to make critical decisions, learn, and process information. Addiction leads to memory loss and irreversible brain damage. Drug and alcohol use changes the brain over time, and floods the brain with high volumes of dopamine, which is the neurotransmitter that is released when we experience pleasure. Eventually, the body builds a tolerance to drugs and alcohol causing the brain to think it needs more. The high levels of dopamine challenge the user to repeat the drug or alcohol use, in larger amounts to feel the same pleasurable feelings.

Addiction affects other major organs in the body. Drugs and alcohol can cause chronic heart problems and diseases that could result in heart attacks, high blood pressure, and an irregular heartbeat. These heart complications can be fatal. Addiction can also contribute to cirrhosis of the liver, cancer, and organ damage or failure. Drug and alcohol use also weaken the immune system, which can make a person prone to many diseases and viruses.

Addiction not only causes internal changes, but also physical changes in appearance. It affects the organs and can alter a person’s skin, hair, nails, weight, and teeth. Alcohol is a depressant and can elevate symptoms of depression. Some drugs can increase symptoms of other mental health conditions.

When a person is addicted to drugs and alcohol, the entire body is affected. The physical changes in the brain make it very difficult for a person to stop using. Although there is no cure for addiction, there is treatment and hope in recovery. If you or a loved one is struggling with addiction or a substance use disorder, do not be afraid to ask for help.
